Keeping it Small, Simple, and Beautiful

To be successful, a small house also should be straightforward, composed of simple architectural forms and construction techniques, quality materials, and careful detailing. Quality feels better than quantity, while spirit and personality bring a house to life.  When the homeowners' dream is a practical one, here are some things to consider:

  1. Raise the ceilings to create a greater sense of space.

  2. Don’t over-use textures. Keep the ceiling material simple and bright so it feels open.

  3. Use expensive materials where it really matters such as doors and windows. You’ll get even more return on that investment in the winter and summer months.

  4. Minimize hallways, but do provide some separation of space to provide privacy. While open concept has risen in popularity, most people still prefer a separate bedroom.

  5. Create long views where possible, preferably to an outdoor space.

  6. Make rooms as multipurpose as possible. Squeezing a second bedroom in could also be someone’s studio / office / yoga room.

  7. Use as many windows as possible without skylights which can create problems down the road.

  8. Create private outdoor spaces where a living room or common area activity can spill out onto a patio or deck.
